The story Joe tells is the life of many independent developers. You work, commute home, eat, then start on side projects. There are variations of this if you have kids and/or a partner but it all leads back to a life balance that may be a bit out of whack. Joe does an excellent job of talking about how much he has learned from living this way, but also how he needed to make a change. It's improved his life and a good read if you feel your side projects are taking over all your time, even if you love working on them.
I think the main takeaway is that by giving your side projects some room to breath, you could have better focus and clarity on the direction they should take.
